The MIB raises the voice of immunology at the heart of Europe

Last week in Brussels, the Marseille Immunology Biocluster (MIB) took a major step forward by asserting its presence on the European stage. During a conference dedicated to Europe’s role in life sciences, Denis Bertin, co-founder of the MIB, delivered a powerful message emphasizing the urgency of repositioning immunology as a central pillar of contemporary biomedical research.

His speech caught the attention of Euractiv, one of the most influential media outlets on European policy, which highlighted his key message:

“Immunology should now be the entry point for all research.”

This stance reflects an undeniable scientific reality: the immune system is no longer an isolated field, but the common thread linking cancer, infections, and inflammatory diseases. It is within the immune system that the future of medicine is taking shape.

To enable Europe to fully tap into this potential, several key actions must be taken:

  • Go beyond disease-specific funding silos
  • Accelerate cross-border clinical trials
  • Adapt data regulations to better serve research
  • Mobilize capital to help European biotechs scale globally

In this context, Denis Bertin also introduced Safe Place for Science, an initiative led by Aix-Marseille University. This program aims to provide researchers with a stable and secure environment — essential for retaining talent in a rapidly changing world.

From Marseille to Brussels, this move is far more than a visibility effort. It reflects a clear strategic ambition: to place immunology at the heart of tomorrow’s European health and innovation policies.
